I had about 50 songs on my playlist pre-game
this week and spent a couple hours deciding what NOT to play. This
more-than-preparedness defined this game for us. Granted we were missing
5 players, but those of us that showed up were ready to go. Everyone
was early and the game before ours was running late, so we did our
best to stay loose and warm. Warm wasn't hard. I was sweating just
standing there. We were missing some of our favorite bats, and some
of our most fervent fans, but we had two dogs in two uniforms. No
one else has that. :)
We faced off against the Jagerbombers and kept them from scoring in
the first half of the inning. We thought we had this one in the bag,
but then they kept us scoreless too. Okay guys, time to get serious.
The next time up we held them again, but scored 7 runs ourselves.
From there it only got better. The lead increased and we held them
to very few runs.
Our defense was impressive. Byrd did great stepping into shortstop,
Melissa did great catching. Tim held his own at third and let very
few by. And those that got by were halted by Matthew in the left field.
Smart infielding is what kept this game under our finger. We all know
we can hammer those runs in, but when we keep the other team from
scoring, it's like giving ourselves a free ride. We still need to
focus on hitting line drives instead of popping them up. We won't
get so lucky with the other team dropping the ball from here on out.
My favorite play of the game goes to Tim for hitting a nice infield
home run. Our baserunning gets smarter every week. And Tim's speed
gets him around those basesso fast you'd swear he never left home
plate.
As we walked away from the field, we overheard the other team belly-aching
the we were too good to be in this league. That's a really big compliment,
considering we just moved up two leagues from last season. And we'll
move up again next season too. But I ask you, Jagerbombers, since
you are in 7th place, uh, shouldn't you be moving down a league?
Next week, the competition gets fierce with the semifinals at 7pm
and the championship at 8! Be there or be S-Q-U-A-R-E.
