TBFC: Thank God For Cloud-Cover
By Lauren Henschen, Manager
It's good to be back. Real good. Totally psyched
for this week's game, I laid low all weekend. I started stretching
at about 3:30pm and was ready way early. I arrived at Kiwanis at about
5 til 5 and hit up the batting cages. Bought myself a fresh 20 round
pass and hit 2 rounds of balls. I felt ready. By that time it was
5 after 5 and I thought to myself "My LORD it's hot. What am
I supposed to do now?" So I hung out in the batting cage shack
and enjoyed the air conditioning. Eventually Matthew showed up to
hit some balls, so I kept him company. Then we hung out in the A/C
again. Then he bought and ate a $1 ice cream sandwich. Then we headed
to the field!!!
I knew this game would potentially be the hottest of the year. And
seriously, no kidding, it was. And that sun was bright and beating
down on us. But one inning into the game...the clouds came. And thank
God for those clouds. Amanda's pitching was being weighed down by
that sun, man, I am telling you. As soon as we got that little break,
we were good to go. Once we obtained a lead, we held it the rest of
the game.
Hitting was amazing. Mostly singles, but we kept bringing people in
one or two at a time. It was amazing. Base running was phenomenal.
Aaron sacrificed his ankle to be safe at third. He's actually healing
on the couch right now. Brian twisted an ankle too. Man, the injuries!
Get well soon, Aaron and Brian.
I was happy with everyone's performance. Once again, there were a
maximum of like two errors, but for the most part we were thinking
quickly. Amanda's toss to second and Noel's to first for the double
play is proof of this. I also enjoyed Noel's backpeddling catch for
a nice out.
As I remarked to Noel in the dugout, I feel that the heat slowed us
down...in a good way. It took a little bit of our zealousness away
and made us wait. It made us patient. We started thinking more. And
we were playing like old pros.
Admittedly, I was unsure about my readiness to play. Mentally, I have
been ready since day one after my operation, but physically...let's
just say I haven't been moving around a hell of a lot. Fortuantely,
of my 4 at bats, I had 4 hits and got home every time.
My play of the game goes to all those hitters who held on in those
crucial moments. There were several times when we had two outs against
us, but we didn't give up. We stacked those bases and kept hitting
those singles. Most notably to me, perhaps, was Tim, who had some
nicely placed hits with two outs against us that brought our lead
to a comfortable level. Tracy was right up there too. All of our girls
have been hitting really well, and I have every confidence in saying
we have the best group of female hitters in the league.
We've got next week off for Independence Day. Remember that this week
is Independents Week, so shop locally all week and help keep our money
in our own local economy! I'll let you know as soon as our tournament
schedule is posted.
