Brought to you by the Band-Aids Management Team
My Summer Vacation
By Lauren Henschen, Manager
With only a two week break, the Band-Aids
returned to Kiwanis for our third summer season. To me, it really
feels like a continuation of last season, since we only had that one
weekend off . The only difference is we're on a different field with
a few different teams. But the Empty Pitchers are a team we faced
last season and dominated once again like a sweet flashback.
As usual, my softball experience started off the field when I set
out on errands before the game. The mission: get a new stick of eye
black. Because lord knows I hadn't taken the other new stick out of
my car in two weeks and I'm sure there's a puddle of black in my trunk
somewhere. I had like $7 credit on a Big 5 gift card, so I trucked
myself down to Crisstown and got my shop on. Long story short, after
another pitstop at the dollar store, I managed to come home with two
sticks of eye black and a new pair of sunglasses, and had only spent
about 80 cents total. God I love deals.
I hit up the batting cages at 5pm and was joined by Matthew, John
and Tim. I must say it was nice to see the new guys show up early.
Not only that, but they were hitting pretty darn well. I think our
cage was broken because we got about 25-40 pitches each instead of
the typical 13. I didn't have a problem with it.
We warmed up, which wasn't hard because the sun was still high in
the sky and it was hot out. The umpires called the captains up to
the plate for a pre-game chat. They reiterated some of our league's
unique rules and told us that this season they were going to enfore
them a little more stictly. For example, a runner who is running through
first base must tag the outside (orange) base to avoid collision.
And right after the first inning of play, our team (ahem, Mr. Krause)
was reprimanded for yelling while running to a base. So there clearly
is going to be a little tighter of a hold on the rules this go-round.
I have no worries though. We're a fun loving team.
Our crowd attendance was exceptional. And mascot Fresh made friends
with the Empty Pitchers mascot (a long haired chihuahua whose paws
look like something from the Grinch). Parents...significant others...friends...babies...kids...twenty
somethings. We had a diverse cheering section full of love and energy.
Gotta love those Band-Aids fans, most of them in green, showing up
week after week to share some fun times.
Our game was on...it wasn't our best game, but then again they weren't
the best team ever. But I like them and would gladly play with them
again in seasons to come. We had some solid hits...well, most of us
who didn't strike out twice watching the ball (pointing a finger at
myself). And our fielding was pretty tight too. John/Tim and Angela/Melissa
held on strong in right field, blinded by the setting sun, and still
holding runners as best they could. Brian made a return to shortstop
as Noel was out of town with his bro. And Officer Pheanis showed up
after work to coach 1st base. What a champ.
My play of the game goes to Koryn, who caught two foul balls behind
the plate. Maybe you didn't think they were hard to get, Koryn, but
I guarantee you the catchers on other teams would not have been that
quick. My runner up for play of the game goes to both Amanda for her
line-drive snags on the mound, and to Aaron who hustled to catch a
short pop in the outfield. It was a gutsy move, but that extra effort
sure paid off.
I'd also like to send out a shout out to our three great new additions:
John, Tim and Melissa. You guys/gal proved your worth right off the
bat (pun intended). I'm proud and happy to have you on the team.
Great game, Band-Aids. I'll see you in two weeks for LADIES NIGHT!!!
Empty Nothing
By Amanda Telloni, Assistant Manager
The Band-Aids had returned to their 3rd full
season this past Sunday. It has become a welcome trend that we also
start with some new faces. This season was no different with Bageldog,
P-Swirls and Torme (yes, my sister) putting on their brand new band-aids
jersies. And boy did they look good in them. The game started at
6, but you would've thought it was at 5:30 with the amount of players
and fans that were ready to get the show on the road. We were hungry
to play.
There were some really solid hits in the first inning by the Band-Aids.
We racked up a few runs which gave us confidence in the field as
well to some players that were in unusual positions (Matthew at
3rd, Brian at SS). Matthew had no problem adjusting to being in
the dirt though with a ball that was supposed to go down his throat,
not in his glove. Brian's line drive snag was played easily as well
and he even finished that out with a toss to second for a double
play. The runner really disagreed with that out and I believe even
reenacted the slide to the ump. I thought that was pretty amusing.
Another part of the game that was giggle worthy was the umpire behind
home plate. That guy had no idea what was going on. It must have
been his first game or something because he was all smiles. It might
have been nerves or the fact he was brought up from E league to
blue D league. I particularly enjoyed when the umpire called a pitch
a ball even though the girl swung. Anyway, my favorite play of the
game was when he ran to 3rd to get a closer look at a play in process
and he like lost everything in his pockets. This was enjoyable for
me because my song was playing and I got to hear an additional 30
seconds of Zevon as he was picking up his plate brush.
Great start, Band-Aids, to another memorable season!
