Life Behind The Slammer
By Lauren Henschen, Manager

The greatest hardship behind Sunday's loss to The Slammers was the amazing playlist we had prepared for the second game; a playlist that was never brought to the surface and exposed to that dusty, dusty Kiwanis Park air.

In all seriousness, it was a sad, sad day. And as far as I was concerned, I wasn't really ready to talk about the game until now. The Band-Aids really wanted to win the championship, but we weren't even given the chance when The Slammers were unwittingly inserted into our tournament bracket. They literally came out of nowhere, prayed upon our weaknesses, and left us for dead.

Weaknesses, Lauren? Yes. I can tell you as the Band-Aids left-fielder, that I could see absolutely NOTHING out there for the first three or four innings because the sun was directly in my eyes. It's true that the fielders on the other team were undoubtedly having the same issue, but those Slammers were taking advantage of it and we weren't. You see, many of our hitters have gotten really good hitting the ball to right field because it's generally the most strategic area to place the ball. You're guaranteed at least a double. Wheras usually if you hit to left field, unless it's out of the park, the left and left-center fielders are going to track that thing down and you're as good as out.

Well, had we hit the ball to left field, like any other unskilled team, they too would have been blinded and slow to react. But call it habit, call it not listening to Coach Bob when he said "Hit it to left, they can't see anything out there," or call it blind adrenaline, we didn't really hit the ball to left at all...and they did. Thus, The Slammers were able to take advantage of the negative situation and we were not. Our musical theme became and ironic dagger as one of nature's tricks foiled us. Some call it a beautiful sunset. I call it retinal homicide.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that if we had been playing at 7pm instead of 6pm, we would have won. I would also like to note that I know for a fact there were a few inaccurate calls made by the umps, as much as I love those guys. Some of those pitches were NOT strikes. And Noel definitely tagged the girl running to third. First of all, I was right there and saw it. Second of all, honestly, why would he have stopped running after he tagged her if he hadn't tagged her. He clearly was much faster and could have even run to the other side of her to tage the bag...

Oh well, semantics semantics. We lost. I was sad. The fans were sad. But next season...Next season we will be back...two weeks, my friends. Two weeks is all that stands between The Band-Aids and their next victory. Until then, keep your chins up. And fans...you're the best! See you May 4th!

And on a final note, I'd like to say a fond farewell to Guillermo Lopez and Drew Henschen, who are leaving the Band-Aids, but not in spirit. Guillermo takes home my play of the game for scoring a crucial double in the final inning when we needed it most. Both Guillermo and Drew were members of the original Band-Aids team in Summer of 2006. And though each of them took seasons off, they always managed to return to the thing they loved, playing softball with the Band-Aids. Thanks for sticking around, guys!

There's only 5 of us left now from season one: Amanda, Charles, Koryn, Brian and myself.
Only 3 of us who have been here since game one without taking time off: Koryn, Charles and myself.
And only 1 of us who has never missed a single game: Koryn.

Take a look sometime at the Band-Aids Team page at all the Band-Aids that have come and gone, creating a perverbial family tree, a cornucopia of memories and fun times gone by. Oh, but there are many, MANY more to come.

And with a new season, our seventh, comes rejuvenation and hope. I'd like to welcome our newest Band-Aids: John Krause, Tim Gammage and Melissa Telloni. Look for their bios, coming soon to the "Team" section. Get ready for Summer '08, baby! We're moving up to D League!!!

God Slam It
By Amanda Telloni, Assistant Manager

We had the field all to ourselves for warm-up on Sunday. It was a perfect day to play some slow pitch softball. The sun was out, the sprinklers were on, the field hadn't been used since the previous game the day before and we were looking good. The Band-Aids were pumped for the first game because we were playing an unknown team called The Slammers from a different bracket. They too were undefeated, but whatever...we are Marshall. We are the Band-Aids.

The first inning went just fine. They scored a run and we came into the dugout with high hopes of having a great inning ourselves. And we did. Drew hit a double, Tracy had a solid hit and per usual, Noel hit one over Kiwanis fence.

Second inning wasn't as nice for us. The Slammers crossed the plate at least 12 times. It was hard to watch and hard to pick ourselves up after the beat down that happened in the second. Our bats didn't really come out to play for us at all and we definitely rallied back in the last inning, but not as hard as we could have. I think if we were allowed 4 outs then we would've made it to the second game, but rules are rules.

I'm very sad to have our season end the way it did because we deserved the championship. It's not that we needed the trophy to seal that we are the better team out there, I just felt that because we always have so much fun and that we really have come far from the past 2 years (believe me, we've really come far) we really should be holding it above our heads. I know the next season starts in less then 2 weeks and thank god because that's makes the healing process easier. Onward and outward, Band-Aids.
