Sluggers Sluggish, Can't Stick With Band-Aids
By Lauren Henschen, Manager

I was early this week, for a change. It was necessary because I knew the game this Sunday would be a challenge...a new version of an old classic. Things were different. I had a new iPod stereo and a huge backup battery to carry (which we had to purchase after discovering there are no outlets near the field). Luckily, Rachel and Charles were over before that game and Rachel had a chance to break herself in with the new system before it was gametime. As Charles, Rachel and Aaron had fun down by the pool, I sat in my room, determined to create the best damn playlist my iPod has ever seen. Colors week was such a great week for music, let me tell you. The list of possiblities seemed neverending and I didn't want to just throw something together. I knew there'd be a lot of fans at this game and I wanted to give them their time's worth.

Finishing up the playlist with about 5 extra minutes on my schedule, I booked it down to the hot tub where I soaked with Charch and Rach, hoping I would rehabilitate myself from the soreness I had acquired volunteering for the 7th Avenue Street Fair on Saturday. I actually think it helped.

Arriving early to Kiwanis, fully prepared with a bottle of water and Snickers energy bar (my only meal since breakfast), even with a brand new stick of eye black for the team, I hit up the batting cages and was soon joined by Aaron and Charles. Some girl in the cage next to me was plowing those balls way harder than I was and it kicked my competetive spirit into overdrive. Then I realized, "hey, if we ever run low on girls again, Charles, Amanda and I can just hang out at the batting cages one evening and recruit some." That might be creepy. Let's wear suits!

Ready for a game, ready for a challenege, ready for some hi-fi stereo melodies, the Band-Aids took on the Sluggers with an air of confidence...a refreshing change of pace from the air of undeserved cockiness we used to portray after having won a couple games in a row. We're really together this season. We don't let our success get to our head and we don't let our mistakes get the better of us.

Up by 6 runs in the first inning, we had gone all the way through the batting order and were feeling good. But the Sluggers stuck back, scoring 11 or 12 runs right away. But did we get scared? No. Did we run away? No. We're Band-Aids. We stick with it. And stick with it we did, eventually pulling ahead, though the game was nearly neck and neck the entire way.

Our defense had some shakey moments, but luckily our offense, both hard-hitting and smart-running has been superb! Matthew continues to wow us. And a number of our players were able to place the ball into right-field (generally a team's weakest spot...not us though, we've got all our bases covered - pun intended). My play of the game goes to Charcho for catching a screaming line drive at a time when his confidence had been shaken. That play closed an inning and kept the Sluggers from acquiring more runs.

The Sluggers had verbally challenged us last weekend, saying that they were the team to beat and that we'd better watch out. Guess again, Slugtards! Fo' real though, they were nice. They were a good bunch and their post-game high-fives were sincere and not-forced. I hope we see them again in the tournament.

After the game, we got a glimpse at Anton Sports. We'll be playing them April 6th. The only other undefeated team. I'm ready to face them. I say bring it on! You hear me, Anton Sports?! You may remind me of when I played basketball in middle school and all the girls were bigger than me and I was scared, but I know I can run circles around you!!!!

CIRCLES!!!!!!

Band-Aids "Strategery" Superior to Sluggers
By Charles Pheanis, Assistant Manager

During the good sportsmanship high-five exchange teams can usually expect a "good game" from most of the players. However, we definitely got a "You guys are really good" from one of the Sluggers girls. Thank you. This blog is dedicated to you missy.

The "Surge" in Sunday night's slide to success against Strategic Sluggers was a God send. Please excuse my ode to the Slugger's use of alliteration. It was an awesome game and I think we can credit the win to good attendance. Thank you to all of our supporters who were at the game. You make the highs higher and the lows easier to pull out of. I encourage you to petition the City of Tempe for seating upgrades at the park, including seat warmers!

My Sunday got off to a rough start. Since it was an early game I took the day off work, which prompted Rachel and I to stay at Koryn and Roy's Saturday night dance party until 3 AM. Around 1pm we rolled out of bed and went to Aaron and Lauren's for a dip in the spa. Of course Aaron and I made the worst possible meal for a pre-game. Half a brick of Velveeta, two can's of beans, a pound of chorizo, a can of chillies, and a bag of chips later...my stomach was a dryer full of bricks and mortar.

Then, Aaron, Lauren and I being on the same schedule, we threw our softball uniforms in the washer and dryer. I suggested we pull pieces of the uniforms out at random and do a mix and match, but there were no takers. Knowing now how cold it was, I would have been sorry to have picked Lauren's patented short-shorts.
Despite the arctic gusts of wind, things got off to a smooth start. Lauren's new music delivery system seemed to work great. Although its omni-directional feature means lower audibility in the field, the sound quality is much improved in the dug-out, batter's box, and bleachers. Way to go Lauren and Rachel.

A six run start was a great feeling, but apparently not enough to inspire our defense in the first inning. The Strategic Sluggers caught all the breaks and went up to 11 runs. The umpire told me that usually if a team scores eleven runs in the first inning, the game is over, but he knew this game was not over, and he wasn't bashful about saying it.

A few bombs by Noel and Matthew put us way over the top. My play of the game goes to Aaron "Double A" Argabright who showed us the "Double A" might stand for "American Airlines." With bases loaded Aaron flew a perfect flight pattern into right field to bring in three runs. I guess not being drunk at the game helps. Perhaps pilots could learn a lesson from you. I also give Aaron props for the slide into home plate that almost earned a run. I literally could not see him through the dust from first base.

Attendance was great in the dugout as well as the bleachers. More bodies means fresher legs, and more support and cheering. Let's keep it up. See you in two weeks.

Stay sticky Band-Aids!

Slugfest '08
By Amanda Telloni, Assistant Manager

Ahh...It was 6 o'clock on a Sunday evening and there was no other place I truly wanted to be than Kiwanis park. Ok, I'm completely lying here because the previous evening (or shall I say morning) a few of us were up until about 4 a.m. still dancing to some Bee Gees and I didn't want to stop. I never want to take a time out at a dance party even if I know that I should be resting up what would be a fantastic game.

I love showing up to the field and every single Band-Aid always cordially acknowledges when another teammate arrives. As cliche at it might sound, it always makes my heart warm a bit and I am completely happy. It's like when you would get to the playground during recess and you know you're going to have a good time because over by the monkey bars you see Tracy or Ian digging in the dirt and you know that it'll be a fun playtime.

This week's theme was colors and we really took advantage of the song choices. When Noel took his time walking up to bat and stopped to adjust his Irish top hat and I soon heard Ice-T's hostile voice rapping "I am a nightmare walking psychopath talking" I felt my blood pumping and nothing could stop me from throwing my hands up in the air...and I totally did. What happened after that? Noel ripped the ball over the fence like the crazy, mofo gangster he is.

Sunday's game there were many plays that were jaw droppers. I particularly enjoyed the wave that started after Noel's second HR cleared and Aaron's consistent slams to right field. This week, my favorite "play" was all the fans that came out to support their favorite softball team. I want to give a huge thanks to everyone that showed up and consistently shows up (and sometimes even bringing beverages and treats!). When I glance over into the stands and see our fans laughing, clapping and telling the ump how it should be, it gives me that same heart warming feeling I get when showing up to Kiwanis.

Get ready for a new theme week coming to you soon. Spoiler Alert!!!
