Pesto, Not So Saucy...Needs Pep-per
By Lauren Henschen, Manager

It’s always a treat when the blue comes looking for me at the beginning of a game. You know what it means? It means there is a problem with the other team. And that problem about 98% of the time is that they don’t have enough girls present to play. I am proud to say that the Band-Aids have never been in a position that we would not have enough girls to play. In fact, when I look around before the game starts, the first thing I usually note is that all four of our other girls are already there, so we’re totally good to go. Lord knows we’re never short on guys…

That being said, we were automatically up by two runs (which wasn’t factored in to the scoresheet I was keeping, now that I think about it…time to investigate...) because, as the blue notified, they didn’t have enough girls to start the game.

But start we did…and by and by we were neck and neck with Pesto, a team ranked at the very bottom of our bracket, which only goes to show that the rankings hold little to no value when one team is having a good day and the other is, well, all over the place.

It was, by most accounts, a rough game, especially in terms of defense. There was a lack of communication and, as usual, that good old-fashioned Band-Aids “I can totally throw to home plate from the outfield because I’ve seen it on TV” spirit.

The saving graces that we had were Laura, who stepped in for Natalie (on injured reserve...it makes me want to cry) and Noel and Byrd, who continue to have good, solid hits. On the other hand, I’d like to commend the entire team for being less trigger-happy at the plate…for taking more walks and realizing that it gets us an extra player on base…sometimes and extra player on second base in this crazy league.

The game came to a close with a final push in the bottom in the last inning, proving that the Band-Aids have what it takes to “seal the deal.” And as the last bite was taken out of an overdone Pesto, the Band-Aids were satiated once again with a nice W-I-N. Our fans reclined from the edge of their seats where once they had risen to applaud a strategic strike-out at the hands of Amanda "T-Rex" Telloni. I love our fans, seriously, more than they know. And to look over while I'm playing and see our mascot, young Fresh, bundled up from the icy winds in a Navajo blanket with Lisa Telloni...it makes me want to win, not just for myself, but for them.

My play of the game goes to Koryn, who is the only person who, without fail, calls me before each game to tell me she is running late for warm-ups. This week I didn’t even get her message until after the game because I myself was running late. But just listening to that message as I drove towards a Casey Moore’s post-game celebratory drink made me happy, proud even. To have a team that cares so much about something others take for granted…it’s like we’re getting the most out of life somehow. And for someone who appears young enough to still gets carded for trying to buy a lottery ticket, it’s great to feel like a wise old sage who has long since learned the secrets of life.

Band-Aids fa LIFE!

Pesto fa DINNA!

I came home from work early on Sunday for the game. I freshened up my uniform (which I had not washed since last week's game) by throwing it in the dryer with a wet rag and a fabric softener dryer sheet. It totally works. So while my uniform was "getting clean" I sat with Lauren on the couch and watched Wayne's World II. Lauren offered me half of her sandwich, but I told her that I already had plans. I would be eating "Pesto" for dinner. Little did I know, the main course would not come until the bottom of the final inning.

"I'm bringin' sexy back, YEAH."

Sexy songs night was awesome. I especially like it when we have a unique theme which the other team doesn't understand. It's like an inside joke for us, which keeps our spirits high. Some of the Pesto players probably thought we're perverts or something. I'm sure they'll figure it out when they check out this recap on TheBandAids.com so they can download all our sexy songs. Theme nights are awesome. Remember to send in your ideas for themes when you have them. I can't wait until we do show tunes. I call Phantom of the Opera!

We went into tonights game with plenty of confidence. What we really lacked was defense. Pesto had some heavy hitters that no one was expecting. According to the City of Tempe Co-Rec Softball website, Pesto lost to Anton Sports 1 run to 17 last week. Although whoever maintains that website referred to our opponent as "Pesco" and referred to us as "the Band-Aids." Whoever fails to utilize the shift key when the MLA style manual demands it, and mistypes with their left index finger cannot be trusted. However, we do need to keep our eyes on Anton Sports, who is the only other undefeated team.

Fortunately we play them in our last regular season game. Apparently Anton Sport is a local embroidery and screen-printing shop. I'm expecting pretty sweet uniforms from them...but they couldn't possibly rival ours.
Back to the game...my play of the week goes to Byrd's great hit to right field in the final inning to win the game. Great placement Byrd. I was a little nervous after all the trash talk Byrd and Noel were doing during the same inning Byrd had a few errors, but he came back to win the game.

I also want to give some props to Laura who stepped in for us in right field. If you didn't hear, Natalie tore the meniscus in one of her knees, and might not return this season. In case you weren't aware, the meniscus is "a cartilage disk that acts as a cushion between the ends of bones that meet in a joint" according to www.answers.com. Anyway, Laura brought game and had a great hit. I also felt that she meshed well with the team. Thanks Laura.

So we had only one umpire. WTF? Our sponsors paid good money for this league, and so did we. By the way, if you haven't paid Lauren your $15.00 yet, you need to get on it because TISNF (that is so not fair). And the one umpire we did have didn't have a clue most of the time. I don't know what his deal was, but that blue was clueless. Oh well, I guess we can't complain.

And once again we come from behind to win. This is a huge change for The Band-Aids franchise. We used to be a great start bad finish team. We're showing poise and, I thought I'd never say it, stamina. Way to go Band-Aids. Keep up the good schwork.

Pesto in the morning, Pesto in the evening
By Amanda Telloni, Assistant Manager

It's not too difficult to realize how cool our team really is. I mean even with the elimination of our blogs, theme weeks and being sponsored by an uber cool bar, The Band-Aids would still have more fans in our bleachers than the opposing team could fill on the field. And so was the case this past Sunday. The night was brisk, my friends, and a game was underway.

At first start, we definitely had confidence that we were going to blow Pesto out of the park. Noel and I were going back and forth all week on how early we were going to be able to make it to Casey's because of how many runs we were planning on scoring. Pesto was a real suprise that I don't think anyone of us were truly expecting. They hit the ball hard throughout the field and it definitely didn't help with the rough inning I had on the mound and a few balls that we botched up all around (great relay though from Charcho to Conna to Byrd...it saved the Pesto dude from a homerun).

The Band-Aids rallied though. We had a few solid innings where we scored plenty of runs and Charles really set the tone during the game when he went into 3rd base grunting (favorite play of the game) to prove to Pesto that we weren't going to crawl under the rug. The running trend the past few games has been for us to come back in the final inning. Perhaps this is a tactic we have all been unaware of to keep the game that much more exciting. Nevertheless, we pulled another win that Sunday night, making us undefeated.

I would like to acknowledge Laura coming to sub in for Natastic on Sunday as well. She showed up all smiles with her pink running pants on. Laura, you really had a great game and The Band-Aids management team commends your hard work in right and looks forward to future games we can share together. It might not be "sexy" or "one hit wonders" themed, but we can definitely guarantee you some fun and a win.

Gooooooooooooooooooo Band-Aids!
