Brought to you by the Band-Aids Management Team
The Band-Aids Cruise E-asy Street
By Lauren Henschen, Manager
As I arrived at Kiwanis this Sunday, I felt
the way I always feel at the beginning of a new season: excited and
realizing I need to pee and that there are no doors on the stalls
at the Kiwanis field bathroom. Nonetheless, I was hopeful as I walked
up to Bob, the friendly field manager whose daughter's name also happens
to be Lauren (and my dad's name is Bob!). The moment he saw me he
said, "The Band-Aids!" the way a messy kid says, "Ice
Cream!" I picked up the scorecard for the game and headed to
our new field. Beginning to fill in our batting order, I heard a familiar
voice call for my attention. It was the umpire for our field, taking
a break from officiating to raz me a little through the fence. "So
you guys are back, huh? What did you get demoted?" I explained
to him that our move down to the "E" league was a strategic
move and that we expected to take the league by storm. "As long
as you've got some good tapes," he chuckled, referring of course
to our weekly iPod playlists.
One by one, the Band-Aids arrived. Some old, some new, some with snazzy
yellow socks, some with cool new equipment. I realized that every
season we grow and change. Every member of the original Band-Aids
team had but one thing in common...they all knew me...from some walk
or other of life...they all knew me. Seven of us are still on the
team. Now there are more people, some I am meeting for the first time,
and the main thing we have in common is that we love being Band-Aids.
So as we witnessed a few new players take the field (Ian, Natalie
and Drew Byrd), those of us returning got to remember what it was
like at our first Band-Aids game and how we had no idea what to expect.
Like the first great home run that Brian hit, only to run to the wrong
home plate and get called out. Or the days before I decided to wear
a slide-protector, when I left most games with a bloody, dirty leg.
The first game of this season was a total succcess. Not only were
we aided by the addition of great new players, but everyone on the
team seems to be getting better. My favorite play of the game to me
reflects the true nature of the Band-Aids. Because, although it involves
two of our newest members, it embodies what makes this team unique...connection.
We're a family. At times, literally. We've had siblings, roommates,
a parent, and even an uncle and niece on the team at one point. Some
of us have known each other nearly all our lives. And this season
we were joined by two brothers Ian (of the Woodward clan) and Drew
(of the Conrads). The moment in which Noel made a quick snag at shorstop
and flicked it without thinking to his brother Drew at 3rd for the
out was like watching two people who have worked together all their
lives. It was effortless. And THAT E-ase, to me, is what E-League
stands for.
Empty Pitchers Not
An Empty Promise
By Charles Pheanis, Assistant Manager
Sunday's game was a terrific start
to The Band-Aid's 6th season. Our new talent and veterans worked together
seamlessly to bring in the first win of 2008. Natalie graced right
field with a performance never seen before in the field we have so
often neglected. Drew had a great start at third base having no problem
turning plays with brother Noel. Ian Woodward took a difficult challenge
playing first base for his debut, but showed he's got the right stuff
when it comes to fielding and made the spectacular winning out.
The Empty Pitchers are an old adversary. We played them last season
in "D" league. I especially enjoy their jerseys as their
numbers are displayed as the player's B.A.C. (blood alcohol content.)
Despite their clever jersies and team name, their pitcher seemed unable
to deliver consistent strikes regardless of his graceful form. We
showed experience and strength by taking balls and picking our pitches.
My pick for favorite play goes to Brian Young's slide into third base.
He demonstrated a flawless slide and let the other team know we were
willing to sacrifice our bodies for a win. If you haven't checked
out the pictures, Brian's wound is pretty nice, and it raises a philosophical
question: Can a Band-Aid, in good conscience, use a Band-Aid?
Family Reunion
By Amanda Telloni, Assistant Manager
Entering the 6th season of the
Band-Aids I felt confident...Not because I had on a brand new jersey
with a nickname, not because Iron Maiden was playing in the background,
but because I was in my niche. Whether it be Kiwanis field, Daley
park or the Tempe Sports Complex the Band-Aids always bring a sparkle
to my life. Although, this night was particularly exciting because
the new players had made the most important decision of their life:
to join the Band-Aids co-rec level E softball league.
Let me break it down for you, there was nothing E about it. There
were strike outs, triples hit, slides slid, line drives snagged and
music blared. Natalie, Ian and Drewface fit in so easily with the
team that you couldn't have ordered up better players. This team will
go far, but not too far away from Casey's.
B.A.C.
(Boofed Acronym Chumps)......
A Special Guest Blog by Noel Conrad
Well, another season, another championship. We
should walk through this season if our first game is any indicator of
the type of teams we shall meet. B.A.C. was nothing short of an outrage...to
be on the same field as those monkeys.
Enough talk about a loser. The winner, our wonderful team, displayed
a number of new talents and exciting plays that will propel us into
our next game. Speaking of winners, the new addition of Ian, Natalie,
and the Byrd man will most definitely give us the right combination
needed to take "the bandaids" to the next level. This is the
stuff of champions.
My favorite play goes to our big new addition at first base Ian, with
the line-drive snag in the last inning. So much for having not played
ball in a while, Ian looked as though he's been playing in his dreams.
One last big play, the play of the stereo came in huge. Especially starting
the game with a little Iron Maiden getting us all rocking and ready
to dominate.
